An 18-year-old man was fatally shot by a Homewood police officer Monday night during a confrontation at a city park. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as Jabari Latrell Peoples, a resident of Aliceville. Homewood police officer fatally shoots Aliceville teen who pulled gun at soccer park, officials say
A teen died at UAB Hospital after he was shot by Homewood police in a city park.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the slain teen as Jabari Latrell Peoples. He was 18 and lived in Aliceville.
The shooting happened at 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Homewood Soccer Park in the 1800 block of South Lakeshore Drive near Columbiana Road.
Sgt. Mark Trippe said a Homewood officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle at the park. The park was otherwise empty at the time, police said.
Peoples, police said, was inside the vehicle engaged in a physical altercation and then pulled a gun.
The officer then shot Peoples.
He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m.
No officers were injured.
Per department policy, the investigation has been turned over the State Bureau of Investigation.
